Fragmento original: Over the more than two decades of free trade between Mexico and the United States (1994-2018), there has been an important alignment between the countries on strategic and security matters. New blueprints for bilateral cooperation have been created and there has been greater agreement regarding security in the region, especially with respect to Central America. However, the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House and the internal crises in both countries—the opioid epidemic in the United States and the escalation of violence in Mexico—have cast serious doubt on burgeoning security cooperation.
In February 2018, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California San Diego, in association with the Justice in Mexico program at the University of San Diego, gathered experts on security and violence, journalists, and former officials from both countries to discuss the areas of concern and opportunity in U.S.-Mexico cooperation. The arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the Mexican presidency represents an opportunity to resume a dialogue at the highest level around bilateral security.
As a group of academics and former officials from both countries, we have assessed bilateral collaboration on security issues and propose a road map to enhance cooperation between the governments of Mexico and the United States.
